ACE Mentoring Program: Array's Students Receive Top Honors
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (June 2, 2009) – Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions, a leading planning, architecture, and interior design firm in the healthcare industry, is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first-year participation with several student scholarship recipients.
The ACE Mentor Program is a volunteer organization that matches facility design, engineering, and construction professionals with aspiring high school students to encourage, educate, and engage the next generation of industry leaders in the design and construction industries.
Members from Array’s King of Prussia (Metro Philadelphia) and Beachwood (Metro Cleveland) offices served as mentors for teams of students charged with providing sustainable and humanitarian solutions to modern urban challenges.
The Philadelphia team was challenged with developing a new approach to urban housing, selecting a site in North Philadelphia and developing a viable scenario to rejuvenate the region’s Habitat-for-Humanity program housing. The team adopted the name, Suburban Meets Urban and was so successful that Samuel Capizzi of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School received the $5,000 Hill International Scholarship—the program’s highest honor—for his efforts. Six other students from the Suburban Meets Urban team also received scholarships ranging from $500-$3,000.
“Participating as a mentor in this activity was a very enjoyable experience,” notes Michael Ryley, a 12-year veteran of Array and CADD / Revit Manager. “This is the type of program that I would love to have had when I was in high school. Even today, I learned a great deal just from interacting with the students. Watching them win several awards was an added benefit.”
The Cleveland team was challenged with redeveloping the underutilized Rockefeller Lake Park in the city’s Glenville neighborhood and reintroducing it as Universal Park, a central activity hub for the Greater University Circle community. Major improvements to the Park included improved paths and trails; gazebo expansion; and new construction in the form of a concession stand, maintenance building, and pedestrian bridge.
“This was an opportunity to not just help shape the future of our profession, but to also help redevelop blighted areas of our community,” notes Architectural Designer, Daniel Polak. “It was also a lot of fun!”
In the Philadelphia program, eight teams were formed from students in various public schools throughout the five-county Southeastern Pennsylvania region. Array’s team of student participants included:
