KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions, is pleased to announce the receipt of the Design & Health International Academy’s 2010 International Interior Design High Commendation, for Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. The International Academy for Design & Health is a global, community dedicated to the stimulation and application of research concerning the interaction between design, health, science & culture. This award recognizes therapeutic spaces that enhance the health, well-being and quality of life for patients, staff and visitors. It also recognizes projects which respect the privacy and dignity of patients, while demonstrating originality in design approach and attention to environmental sustainability. The Rainbow Babies project encapsulates all the aspects that the Academy was looking for in an award winning project. Great care was taken to provide a healing and “green” sustainable environment at Rainbow Babies. The flower, sunshine, raindrop and butterfly themed pods reflect the nature elements which inspired these spaces. Plant materials such as actual flowers and grasses can be seen embedded into decorative glass throughout, while graphic nature icons are used for wayfinding, embedded alongside the 'ribbon of water' ribbon flooring feature, guiding you throughout the unit.
Patricia D. Malick, AAHID, EDAC, a founding member of Array and Practice Area Leader, Interior Design was the Lead Interior Designer for the Rainbow project and accepted this award at the Academy Awards Gala Dinner that coincided with the Design & Health Canada International Symposium at the University of Toronto. This High Commendation award is received with great honor as it was chosen from international submissions received from all corners of the world.
Working in conjunction with Parkin Architects Limited, this project was completed in April of 2009, and stands as a shining example of 21st century neonatal care.
