Patricia Malick speaks at 23rd Annual Gravens Conference

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – Patricia Malick, AAHID, EDAC, a Principal and Practice Area Leader with Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions, spoke recently at the 23rd Annual Gravens Conference on the Physical and Developmental Environment of the High Risk Infant.  Pat collaborated with Michele Walsh, MD, NICU Medical Director at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH and Cameron Shantz of Parkin Architects to present their points of view on the Single-Room NICU Concept recently implemented at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

The Gravens Conference, held in February, is an integral part of a much larger movement whose ultimate goal is to optimize infant physical, psychological and developmental outcomes.  As part of the process, the conference seeks to bring the latest research on physical science, design science and behavioral science to attendees.  Invited speakers present research for evidence-based change in the physical environment or care practices.  Alterations in physical design and care practices in hundreds of NICUs worldwide have been the result of this continued attention to the environmental impact on infants, families and staff.  The conference also plays a significant role in the development of Design Standards & Guidelines for NICU as published by American Institute of Architects and American Academy of Pediatrics.

Pat developed the Interior Design for Rainbow’s 38-room NICU, which was completed in May, 2009.  The NICU at Rainbow is ranked second in the nation for neonatal care.  The new space allows each infant and their families to have their own room which includes sleep space for a parent.  The staff work areas are open and plentiful, allowing collaboration as well as encouraging parents to approach their child’s caregivers.  The Unit is segmented into four pods to lessen the large-scale impact the Unit may have on visitors.  Each pod features a contemporary, two-color icon designed by Pat that weaves through the pod as well as a ribbon design that flows from pod to pod changing colors to complement the icon.
